Our Story

Diamond X Quarter Horses is a top Quarter Horse breeding program located on the Proffit Ranch in Evanston, Wyoming. The focus of our program is on the quality of our broodmares and the carefully selective pairing of them with some of the industry’s top studs.

Our broodmare band features daughters and granddaughters of Peptoboonsmal, daughters and granddaughters of Playgun, granddaughters of High Brow Cat, Smart Little Lena, Blue Valentine, and Royal Diligents. Our mares also have many of the other major bloodlines in their pedigrees.

Our stud selections include Hashtags, Dual Smart Rey, WR This Cats Smart, Blind Sided, Im Countin Checks, Bet Hesa Boon, Smooth As A Cat, Stevie Rey Von, and our own HZ Black and HZ Roan stud, MT Rowdy Blue Shark.

Our breeding program includes performance crosses for cutting, reining, and reined cow horse, working ranch crosses for ranch versatility and roping, as well as strategic outcrosses of performance and ranch horse bloodlines. The strategic outcrosses of performance and ranch horses have produced outstanding “decathletes” and healthy genetics. With the good bone, strength, endurance, and great temperaments of the ranch line, and the quickness, cow sense, and intelligence of the performance lines, these horses can do it all. They really can go in any direction you want to take them.

Our business model is to sell our foals as weanlings. We will occasionally have yearlings and two-year-olds available from the foals we have retained for ourselves. Our foals have found new homes all over the United States, and have gone to Mexico and Europe as well. We are proud to produce top horses with outstanding blood lines and make them accessibly priced as weanlings.

We stand our blue roan stud, MT Rowdy Blue Shark, who is both homozygous black and homozygous roan. He has passed on his great temperament and excellent conformation to every foal crop to date. He will always produce a roan foal, and that foal will be a blue roan unless the mare has agouti or cream genes in which case you can get other roan colors (see
https://www.animalgenetics.us/equine/ccalculator1.asp). Booking information can be found on Shark’s page.

We also offer riding lessons, trail rides, ranch adventures, and horse-drawn sleigh rides on our working cattle ranch by appointment only. We welcome beginning riders as well as those with more experience, and have horses in our saddle horse string suitable for every skill level.
